The Grounds Specialists News

The end of winter mean the beginning of lawn care. Take this advice and follow these simple steps from The Ground Specialists and you'll have a head start on a healthy lawn for this coming summer.

With spring nearly upon us and winter rapidly ending, you're probably not spending much time thinking about your lawn. But spring, with its cooler temperatures, occasional rainfall, and ample sundhine is one of the most ideal times to prepare your lawn for summer.

Many homeowners think lawns need less care in the spring because the grass grows more slowly. In fact, just the opposite is true. During this time of year, grass is busily absorbing energy, moisture, and nutrients in preparation for a long, dry summer. Give it your full attention now, and you'll be rewarded with a lush, healthy summer lawn. Just follow these five tips.

Start mowing. just remember not to trim off more than 1/3 of the grass blade in any one cutting. Aerating is also extremely important as aerating your lawn's soil ensures that oxygen, water, and fertilizer can easily reach the grass's roots leaving the turf healthy enough for summer drought. Rake the leaves. Spring brings leaves and old debris. It is imperative that you remove these unwanted nusances from your lawn. If left on the ground, leaves will stick together and form an impenetrable mat that if left unmoved will suffocate the grass and breed fungal diseases.

Fertilize. Most lawn experts agree, if you fertilize your lawn only once a year, do it now in the spring. The reason? Grass leaves grow much more slowly as the weather is cool, but the grass roots and rhizomes continue to grow quickly. (Rhizomes are the horizontal plant stems that lie just beneath the soil's surface; they produce the blades of grass above and the roots below.) A fall application of fertilizer delivers essential nutrients for the grass to grow deep roots now and to keep nutrients on reserve for a healthy start next spring.

Weed Control. If broadleaf weeds like dandelions have taken over your lawn, spring is definitely the time to fight back. Weeds, like most plants, are in the energy-absorbing mode during the spring. They're drinking in everything that comes their way, including weed killers. Apply an herbicide now and the weeds won't show their ugly mugs at your summer pool parties and get togethers.
